We're a shop of a dozen people tucked up in the corner of the country in the coastal city of Portland, Maine. We design and create much of our jewelry, but we also work with a select group of specialty shops around the country and around the world; with artisans and jewelers who make extraordinary pieces.
Cross has discontinued the resetting of diamonds and gemstones not purchased from Cross. We will continue to offer the opportunity to have any diamond or colored gem originally sold by Cross set into a new, updated Cross design, providing the gem size and shape appropriately fits our design. Resetting projects typically take a minimum of 12 weeks with longer time periods for complex and multi-step projects.
Our diamond setters are instructed to take the full measure of time to ensure each job is properly completed. When setting a diamond they work with a 20x power microscope because working under this level of manification means the finished ring is the most beautiful and secure it can possible be. Each weekday we reveal the exotic and rare, one-of-a-kinds, new introductions, with stories of design, origin, magic, and mystery.
Tourmaline is found in our western mountains just outside the city of Portland. We have a passion for Maine Tourmaline and a close connection to Maine's gem miners. Cross has been the state's leader in Maine Tourmaline for over 100 years and maintains the largest collection of these Maine gems ever assembled. Each weekday we reveal the exotic and rare, one-of-a-kinds, new introductions, with stories of design, origin, magic, and mystery.

I bought a pair of earrings from the estate sale section of the website. I was a little hesitant to buy something like that online but it all went perfectly. The earrings are gorgeous and they arrived SO quickly and in lovely packaging! They are just what I was hoping for. I have a feeling I will be ordering from here again and again in the future!

I purchased a sapphire necklace for my wife (anniversary) on Oct 1 and paid for overnight delivery thinking it would arrive by 10/5. On 10/4 called for a tracking # Oh that will go out sometime this week So I cancelled the order. THe frustrating part of this experience was there was no apology, no offer to ship overnight (still had one day left) No this woman only wanted my Cc# to cancel this transaction and be done with me. attitude was don't care if you buy this or not. STAY AWAY especially if it's an important occasion.

Our first visit to Cross Jewelers was such a pleasurable experience. My husband took me there to find an anniversary gift. We had a wonderful discussion with the owner about kayaking and he told us how he and his son were gem collectors. We saw an interesting video of him collecting tourmaline several miles up the coast of Maine. The salesman that waited on me was so thoughtful and helpful. I found a very special anniversary gift I will treasure forever. However we'll always remember the wonderful experience we had at this lovely jewelry store.

I just purchased a second ring from Cross Jewelers, just as perfect and beautiful as the first. Service was great, this was a custom ring and the staff there was friendly and knowledgeable. By the way, I never set foot in their store, both purchases were completed through the phone, email and their website. I will continue to use them in the future.

After 31 years of two kids, dishes, nursing, gardening. I finally selected the most exquisite setting from Cross. With the help of Persephone, I am so happy with the Cape Town setting. It's functionality and practically, is perfect for my life style. The crafmanship that was placed into my ring makes it all the more worth the wait. Thank you Stephen!

First, I want to mention that I am disputing an overcharge. I will change my review should the matter be settled. I have always wanted a ring from Cross Jewelers as they advertise in Yankee Magazine. I wanted a "Returning Tide" ring set in white gold (a sapphire). But it was too expensive. I selected a moonstone ring that was labeled $750.00. That was a splurge.
I was very excited and looking at other rings when I signed the credit card receipt. My mistake not to double check but I trusted them. Don't make that mistake. I did not receive a copy of my credit card receipt. Was it conveniently left out? The ring was boxed beautifully and in a lovely bag. I was told I could use their receipt for "insurance." I wouldn't insure it.
The insurance would be more than the ring and I could barely afford that! When I looked at their invoice it was for $1,1095.00 plus $60.23 tax: total $1,155.33 charged to my credit card. I was stunned. I tried contacting the shop but they were closed. I tried e-mailing them but the e-mail address listed on their brochure is not active. In the brochure, the ring is listed at $750.00.
I feel rather betrayed as I trusted them. I want to add that Moonstones are not an expensive stone. I later found loose Moonstones with both Cat's Eyes and Stars sell for $2.40 to $80.00 (depending on size, inclusions etc.) Granted, they have to be set but $1,1095.00 plus tax is outrageous for a Moonstone Cabochon. It is classified as a Feldspar (Crystal) and is not a primary gemstone.
If the stone would have been 15- 20 carats, then I could see paying $1,000 for it. This is not a case of "buyers remorse." I have read Yankee Magazine for many years and always wanted a ring from this company. I love the ring even if it was not the one I wanted originally. I am sad that I must dispute the charge and the completion of the sale was handled in a errant manner.

For the first time ever Cross Jewelers has let me down. I'm on their email list and saw an item that I liked for my wife's upcoming birthday. I sent my order in over the internet and received a few minutes later a confirmation of my purchase along with the total purchase price. About 2 1/2 hrs later I went back on their website to see if they had earrings that might match and saw the item I got a confirmation on still on their website for sale.
I called and was told someone would get back to me but the nice sales lady said she would pull the item for me to make sure it wouldn't be sold. I received an email back about an hour after that from Cross saying the item had been sold earlier. What good is a confirmation if they can't back it up? And by letting over 3 hours go by there were only 3 like items left that really didn't appeal to me.
I was told they may be getting more in in about a month or so but that will be too late for my wife's birthday. Have been a happy customer for years but this was upsetting!

Cross Jewelers has top notch customer service and a great selection of traditional as well as Maine inspired collections. I recently called on Cross Jewelers when I piece of jewelry I had purchased a few years back was accidentally damaged. My original inquiry was to purchase a new piece but the staff suggested I ship it back to see if it could be repaired in order to avoid purchasing a new one.
Although ultimately the piece was too badly damaged to be repaired, I truly appreciated their efforts to save me some money. I am not sure many businesses would have done the same. The new piece arrived promptly, with free shipping. It was beautifully packaged, beyond anything I would have expected for the return shipping on a pre-purchased piece. Cross Jewelers has a friendly, helpful staff and I most assuredly will continue to patronize this outstanding Maine business.

Have now had two terrific shopping experiences at Cross Jewelers in Portland - first last fall, when I purchased a Maine tourmaline ring, and then again this September, when I purchased a lovely tourmaline necklace. Remarkable client service, so accommodating, and in both cases, there had to be modifications made, which were accomplished swiftly and professionally. I am, in a word, delighted. Bought some beach glass jewelry set in silver for a gift and a lovely souvenir charm as well. Well worth the visit!

My fiance and I went to Cross Jewelers yesterday looking for a second engagement ring that I can stack with my first which I purchased elsewhere (out of state). The first thing you'll notice is that it's up a flight of stairs, so if you are handicapped or on crutches, this will be an issue for you unless there is a handicapped accessible way to go upstairs (which I do not know).
The showroom itself at first seemed small to me compared to some other places we visited (which were not to our liking), but I soon realized that it did not matter. I really liked many of the rings there! There are no low end or garish rings to sort through; it's very nicely curated. We were helped by a delightful gentleman named Andrew who said he has been with Cross since the early 1970s! Andrew was extremely patient, knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor.
I tried on many rings, but ended up not selecting one at this time simply because they didn't stack well with my current ring. Otherwise they had many rings I could see myself wearing. The store itself is nicely appointed. There are cookies and bottled water. I also really like the chandelier. Cross Jewelers is old school charm and service at its finest!

I ordered two Gold Nugget rings to be shipped to my home. I was treated very well despite the fact that I am quite neurotic about over the phone orders. The staff was patient, kind, and produced some fantastic looking rings. The rings came out so well, that my parents are going to order one for themselves. Highly Recommend

It really is a lovely store and everybody was very friendly. I was browsing trying to get some ideas for what to tell my future spouse to be what kind of engagement ring I would like. I had already stopped Two Doors Down at that other jewelry shop which I will not mention because that would be unfair. Kind of like advertising the competition. I have to admit the whole time I was browsing I was wondering how to upscale jewelry stores stay afloat two doors apart.
But then it seems like it's the thing to do in this box of Congress Street as there are two tattoo shops on the same side of the street and one across and to Thai places within 10 doors of each other, and two flower shops immediately next door to each other. I have to admit my roommate and I had a good laugh and said if money laundering were racing in Portland this would be the block to do it on. Anyways excellent choices on settings, beautiful jewelry, and friendly knowledgeable stuff. Where I have to go back to purchase something today it would be here at Cross. Not the other guys LOL.

Wonderful jewelry! I have been shopping at Cross Jewelers for years beginning with catalogs for gift items. When I visited Maine I made sure to visit the shop where I purchased a beautiful diamond ring. About a decade later I moved to Maine and returned to the shop for a custom necklace and a wedding band. Working with the designer on a new necklace was a fun experience. I really enjoy the friendliness of the staff and highly recommend them.

I bought a beautiful ruby and diamond Gibson ring from Cross. I had been admiring this ring for years and finally went and visited and I am thrilled with my purchase. It was a wonderful experience and the ring was a remembrance ring for my parents and very sentimental. I was treated with great respect and courtesy on the phone and in person. I drove an hour to Portland and will drive there again. So much pride from everyone there of their product and their long standing history of great jewelry. Anne

My recent purchase of two rings was a great one. I love them both and they are just what I expected. The fit is perfect and the stones are beautiful, as are the settings. Even with the delivery delay due to storm Stella the Cross people helped track down the rings and got them to me. I give them high praise and will order again for sure.

I had a lovely, overpriced, salt laden dinner and woke up with incredibly swollen hands from all the salt. After trying every method on Google, I called the store for advice and they invited me to come in. They agreed the ring needed be cut, did it gently and for FREE, and kept offering me the sweets they keep in lovely dishes around the store. They knew I didn't purchase the ring there (it was a gift), and they treated me so well. If I ever do want to purchase jewelry, this is the place. They had a wonderful range of gorgeous items at all price points.

I have nothing but good things to say about Cross - this place is as good as it gets. They did a gorgeous job putting a new shank (band) on my great-great-great aunt's delicate diamond and sapphire 3-stone ring, and their cost was very fair. (Just for fun I had a competing jewelry store quote it out; they came in $400 higher than Cross). But their reasonable prices is not what keeps bringing me back to Cross.
It is their impeccable service. I am always treated like family, with a genuine warmth. These people truly love what they do and take pride in it. And they love making customers happy, which goes way beyond "getting a sale". When my fiance and I traveled to Cross from our home in the Boston area to design our wedding rings, John guided us through the process, advising us and educating us along the way.
He even offered to have the rings insured and shipped to save us the sales tax. This is the type of jewelry store, depending on your generation, that your mom or grandmother would frequent, down to the plush green wall-to-wall carpet and the display of candies and sweets. And I absolutely mean this as a compliment - if you are looking for a jewelry store that has up-to-the-minute interior design, contemporary chandeliers, and Breakfast at Tiffany's playing on a flatscreen behind the counter, than Cross is not your place.
But if you are looking for an old-fashioned approach that focuses on the craft and artistry of jewelry making, amazing customer service, and fair pricing, then do yourself the favor of stopping into Cross. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Even if you don't buy anything, they'll give you quarters to feed your meter downstairs. Now that's paying it forward!

My boyfriend took me to Cross to look at engagement rings a few months ago, but he didn't buy anything because he wanted to shop around a bit. After visiting about 5 other jewelers, we can definitively say that Cross is the absolute best. No sappy sales pitch, extremely honest, willing to spend tons of time with you, so professional. I would recommend Cross to anyone who is looking for an honest price on a quality diamond (ask for Karen).
We went back this morning and he bought me a ring! It's the most beautiful diamond we've seen and I can't wait to wear it for the rest of my life. Now I'm just waiting for the proposal :)

My fiance bought my engagement ring here and we were very pleased with the service. I have gotten it resized several times and they have always been patient to make sure it was the perfect fit. We have also gone in to try on wedding rings and they were very helpful. Quality is top notch! Only thing I would suggest is more weekend hours!

They had some nice jewelry but the place is like a funeral parlor. This was by far one of the most awkward and uncomfortable places I've ever stepped foot. They need some revamping. I expect they have a lot of older clients but not sure how they get up the stairs with no elevator etc. Tried to look at diamond rings but became so uncomfortable that I was forced to go elsewhere.
I hear they were worth checking out but I wouldn't go back. Staff was like the walking dead and the place smelled like my grandmothers closet. Try Springers if you're trying to shop for nice jewelry in Portland.

Found a very unique setting for an engagement ring here (Golden Gate). Had them set a diamond that I brought in. The service was excellent. It took them quite a bit of time, but everything was done as promised and quality is superb. I actually drove down from NYC to get this setting. ( I almost ended up getting someone to custom make something similar before I found these guys)

My mom has been wanting to get her diamond reset for a while and looked into some of the settings at Cross Jewelers. They have a Lady Captain style that is classy yet understated and since I was in the area I figured I would check out the store in person for her. After heading up the long carpeted stairway we arrived in the show room and I didn't expect it to bee so upscale.
I took a quick look around and entered my name into a drawing for a $500 gift card. I would have been okay with leaving right then and there, but we were approached by the staff, asking us what brought us into the store today? I explained about my mom's ring setting and that I am more of a filigree fan. At that point we were led to the "antique" looking selection and proceeded to spend the next half hour looking at rings.
While they are nice, I am not sure they are what I am looking for since they seem to be more carved than filigree. I think a mix of both would be beautiful. I did look at one ring twice and the salesperson volunteered to write down the info in case I wanted to order online. He took a black and white picture of it and wrote down the details, but seriously who buys a $6,000 ring online?!?!
One good thing it that I found out my ring size while I was there. Although I think my fingers were a bit swollen at the time. For a fancy schmancy place I felt pretty comfortable and asked questions freely, but my boyfriend felt like they were too pushy by not letting us leave. FYI - I was told that at this busy time of year a ring resetting would take about 5-6 months! What?!?!?! To make up for it they offer dishes filled with jelly belly beans while you shop for nice, yet overpriced jewelry.
