Abraham Fishman (1892-1953;Founder), joined his brother Solomon in the United States in 1943 after making his escape via Lisbon and Tangier from his native Poland during World War II. Shortly thereafter he learned the skills of diamond cutting, and gradually began buying rough diamonds and selling them as polished on the floor of the Diamond Dealers Club to wholesalers and local jewelers.

I can not say enough good things about Josh Fishman. What sets Josh apart from other Jewelers is that he truly listens to what you're looking for. My Fiance and I were in search of a somewhat unique diamond and Josh found several that were exactly what we wanted. Other Jewelers found different diamonds and tried to convince us that these were better than what we really wanted. He made diamond shopping an easy and fun process. I have purchased jewelry over many years from large luxury brands, from mall jewelers, from online retailers, and even from small local shops. Josh's kindness, professionalism, and transparency leaves you feeling you are a family member. Throughout the entire process, there was never a moment of pressure; instead he was patient, answering every question I had, carefully explaining why he made his recommendations. I found A Fishman & Son five years ago when I had an unfortunate accident with my engagement ring. I had damaged the stone and was told by a local jeweler that nothing could be done. Feeling terrible about this I turned to books to learn more and I came across Josh Fishman's book "Beyond the Four C's". I devoured it and on a whim emailed Josh only half expecting a reply.
To my surprise he replied to my email the same day! My husband and I brought him my damaged diamond and he evaluated it and recommended that we recut and reset it. We took his advice and it came out beautiful. My diamonds' beauty and value was saved. From that experience we never went anywhere else. Fast forward five years and just recently we purchased a new diamond to mark an anniversary. Josh took his time with us, showed us many different stones and explained the differences in detail.
He helped us to choose the perfect diamond. I couldn't be happier with it. It was a delightful experience. The diamonds in his inventory are of the highest quality. His are totally different from what is usually on offer at a retail seller. I truly cannot recommend Josh highly enough. Josh is a great Jeweler to work with! The ring took about 5 weeks to be made and came out absolutely gorgeous! It 100% exceeded my expectations and I'm confident that I got the best possible stone I could've gotten within my budget. After meeting with several jewelers in the diamond district, I decided to work with Josh. My girlfriend - now fiance! - did not want a typical solitaire ring, instead she preferred to have an eternity ring. Josh walked me through the whole process, and I was able to select the stones, setting and metal. I truly appreciate that he let me really personalize the process.
Shopping for an engagement ring can be overwhelming, and I am happy I chose to work with Josh because, not only is he professional, he was also very patient through all of my questions and I never once felt pressured. Josh was knowledgeable and honest and that was reflected in the final price. Like Josh, it was reasonable, and I could not have been more comfortable making such a big purchase.

We recently had to the opportunity to visit NYC from Virginia to site see and shop for diamonds to upgrade my wife's stone in her wedding band for our anniversary. After communicating with two different sources for diamonds for the over several months establishing our requirements with a budget up to $25K we were extremely pleased to meet with Mr. Fishman.
The first source, a family run business with many years in the business left us high and dry. We had an appointment which we had confirmed with the owner. We had been in direct contact with him conversing on the phone and via email. He not only did not show up at the store, he left no word of our appointment and needs for someone else to pick up the slack.
We had initially been conversing with his oldest son a salesman at the store and he could have readily filled in but was shocked to see us at the store not aware of our appointment. The owner was called at home from bed to arrive 1.5 hours late and then scrabbled to put a selection of diamonds he had in stock hoping to wow us. We were not only under whelmed but felt his diamonds were extremely overpriced.
The next day we met with Mr. Fishman who had the exact same information and phone discussions. We were professionally greeted at the door and upon entering his office to review our needs we could tell he ready to teach us what we were about to see and show us a selection of stones he had hand selected specifically for us. Packets of diamonds in various cuts were in bundles and resting in his in basket waiting to start the show.
All diamonds presented were superior to those seen the day before. As we viewed the various shapes, rounds, ovals and cushions, while trying to decide which would best fit a new setting in her ring Mr. Fishman offered suggestions without giving a sales pitch or being pushy to help us decide. Having bought diamonds overseas before and done some research on line i was full of questions which Mr. Fishman took his time and patience to answer.
We had not planned to buy at this meeting but my wife, a quiet southern gal, was so comfortable with him and his diamonds, which did wow us that she made a choice of a rare D color 2 carat oval stone. After making a deal we discussed the best way to set this beauty and Mr. Fishman stated the way the old stone was set did not show it off the best to reflect its attributes and recommended he make a new setting which would highlight this brilliant stone.
It should be noted that Mr. Fishman's prices were the best we had seen and his product a superior quality. After the ring was totally redone with all small side stones reset to ensure they were snug and the ring totally polished Mr. Fishman called us to set up shipping. The ring arrived the next day before noon. As my wife opened the package and saw the ring she was beaming. We made the right choice meeting and dealing with a true professional and gentleman.

What was the most important lesson I learned?
To purchase a diamond from an expert diamantaire, who knows what a diamond should look like, not just from a certificate but from the diamond itself. And that, my friends, is Josh. Josh is unbelievably knowledgeable, patient, and accommodating. Before going to see him we were working with a different jeweler and we were just not thrilled with her selection. We decided to keep looking and found Josh's website and made an appointment. We could tell the difference right away when we walked into his office. Everything was brightly lit so we could see exactly what we were looking at (the other jeweler had moody lighting in the store and it was hard to get a good look at the stones!).
He really listened to what we wanted to see and gave us a great selection of stones to look at. He showed us the inside of each stone with a loupe and explained everything so that we knew what we were looking at. We both had the impression, right away, that he just wanted us to be happy with the purchase and that he wanted it to be 100% right for us.
Absolutely everything he showed us took my breath away, which also made me realize that a really beautiful diamond does not have to be huge, if just needs to be the proper cut, color, and clarity to be balanced and beautiful. My boyfriend and I were thrilled with his selection. Josh knows diamonds and will not show you one that he is not proud of, not matter your price range.
He is a "no-pressure" guy who is extremely professional. After a few meetings with Josh we felt confident that we were getting a superior diamond for a very fair price. We will certainly be going back to Josh for any future diamond purchases!

No way around it, buying a diamond is stress-inducing. How do you really know what you're getting and if you're paying a fair price. After a little research, I decided I'd do better buying a loose stone and having it set by a great shop I love (Little King, on Lafayette Street) that does beautiful setting work but doesn't really carry a wide variety of diamonds.
I stumbled on Josh's place after a bit of web searching. He took the time to learn about my preferences (and my budget), educate me on the variations in diamonds, talk about the kinds of things he won't sell (like diamonds cut to look big but with poor proportions), and show me a range of stones -- all without any pressure to buy. His website is excellent for allowing to preview the stones he has in stock and play around with trade-offs in terms of clarity, color, weight, prices, etc.
I love my the diamond I bought. More importantly, my wife loves it. And I'd go back here in a second. (An added bonus is the historical material Josh has on display around the shop -- dating back to when his grandfather (great-grandfather?) opened the business.) My only regret is that I bought the stone over a year ago, and it took me this long to get around to writing this review.
